Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to a group of disorders that affect muscle movement and coordination. CP is the most common cause of motor disabilities in childhood.

Physiotherapy plays a very important role in children with Cerebral Palsy. Our main goal is to make everyday movements easier for children with cerebral palsy.

Those with Cerebral Palsy experience mobility, function, posture and balance challenges of varying degrees, and physical therapy – which focuses on basic mobility such as standing, walking, climbing stairs, reaching or operating a wheelchair – is a key element in the multidisciplinary approach to increasing a child’s mobility.

How we help
• Diagnose, manage and treat movement problems associated with cerebral palsy.
• Use exercises and activities to enhance physical and functional skills.
• Help prevent complications, deformities, and disabilities.
• Promote well-being, fitness, and overall health.
• Facilitate quality of life improvements.

Our thorough examination includes assessment of –
– Range of joint motion – Gait
– Physical strength – Flexibility
– Balance – Endurance
– Posture – Neuromotor development
– Sensory integration – Cognitive functioning
– Reflexes – Breathing functioning

Our Goal
We aim to manage pain, facilitate movement, increase function and prevent future complications. Our therapy help’s to increase one’s strength, flexibility, motor development and mobility. We help with –
• Developing coordination
• Building strength
• Improving balance
• Maintaining flexibility
• Optimize physical functioning levels
• Maximize independence
• Increase participation in self care

Our Treatment
Our treatment is designed to meet a child’s individual needs in a way that emphasizes physical fitness, and minimizes discomfort and pain.

Additionally, we provide positive reinforcement for a child by focusing on his or her capabilities, not limitations. We set goals for our patients, and work with them to meet their needs with confidence in a safe, supportive environment.

Our therapy aids overall treatment goals such as:
• Overcoming physical limitations
• Expanding range of joint motion
• Building and maintaining muscle tone
• Increasing recreational capabilities
• Identifying alternate ways to perform everyday tasks
• Fostering independence
• Decreasing the likelihood of contractures, bone deformity
• Educating children and parents about adaptive equipment
• Providing sensory stimulation
• Increasing fitness
• Increasing flexibility
• Improving posture
• Improving gait
• Minimizing pain and discomfort

Our therapy includes combination of treatment with hands-on as well as adaptive devices & equipment’s. Hands – on techniques involve:

• Soft tissue mobilization techniques
• Joint mobilization techniques
• Specialized exercise programs & techniques (including breathing)
• Stretching
• Play & Aqua therapy

Exercises often include the use of equipments, such as:
– Weights – Exercise machines
– Bands – Rollers
– Balance balls – Heat and cold packs
– Muscle stimulators

We also help with guiding & teaching on adaptive equipments such as braces, splints, walkers, orthotics, wheelchairs used in the therapy.

By preserving and improving overall health and functioning, physical therapy enables children to fully engage in activities of daily life.
