pros-cons-of-working-from-home1

Working from home may sound like an ideal situation – especially if you’ve never done it before. What could be better than simply rolling out of bed and arriving at your home office in moments, without the hassles of first making yourself presentable and then commuting to a workplace.

In reality, though just like working in an office, remote work comes with pros and cons.

The pros and cons of working from home are:

Pros : 1. No Commute – No more traffic jams/ no more crowded buses or train thus saving plenty time & you aren’t frustrated & stressed first thing in the morning.

2. Save Time! – You don’t have to spend ages in the bathroom to get ready in the morning. And with no spending time to commute, just imagine what you can do with that extra bit of time – sleep a bit longer, go for a walk, have a long breakfast!

3. Comfortability – You may wrap up yourself in some comfortable clothes. If you have a bad day or feel a cold coming, relax yourself in your comfy chair.

4. More Time with Family – Since you save your commute time, you can spend that time with your family. If you have a flexible work schedule, you can even watch over your kids.

5. Own Working Environment – You can create your own working environment that works best for you!

Cons :

1. No Human Interaction – Although you will have calls/online meetings with your clients/team members, you might feel lack of social interaction. No coffee breaks/ lunch together might make you feel alone.

2. Hard to Switch Off – You sleep at home & you work at home. Sometimes, it becomes hard to separate your private life & business life. It becomes important to establish dedicated work routine.

3. Many Distractions – Potential distractions are everywhere when you work from home.

4. Unhealthy lifestyle – On one hand, working from home can do wonders to improve your health. But on the other hand, if you don’t focus on taking active frequent breaks or work in improper ergonomic environment or no time to exercise/work-out then you definitely land up with body aches.

5. Uncontrollable working hours – In some circumstances people don’t know when to stop, esp. in global working environments where it demands more support hours.

Physical activity tips for home workers –

1. Create a “commute” – Before you start work, go out for a brisk walk for at-least 15 minutes. Take your child or your dog for a walk. Walking increases your heart rate, kick starts your metabolism & helps relieve stress. The ideal way to start your day.

2. Design your own schedule – Its very tempting to start early & to work into late hours. Producing & sticking to a work schedule will help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.

3. Don’t get too comfortable – Set a timer or use your phone to prompt you to stand up at-least every hour. Stretch your entire body. Move around in the house. Avoid sitting for longer hours.

4. Invest your time in exercise – Too little physical activity in combination with long sitting hours damages your body. Go for desk exercises or interval stretching or walking around, some cardio exercises, exercises to maintain your strength, balance, stability & flexibility to keep you fit & active.

5. Ergonomic safe home office – Make sure your home office set up is ideal to your body & ergonomically safe to avoid aches & pains to your body. Neck/back/knee pains are the most common one’s due to improper posture or lack of activity.
